Fetal Myelomeningocele Repair Surgery: What To Expect

Step 4: Surgery Day

On the day of your surgery you will arrive at St. Mary’s and check-in at surgery registration on the first floor of the main hospital. First, you will be escorted to the pre-operative area. Your family is welcome to be with you. An intravenous line, or IV, will be started in your hand or arm and fluids and antibiotics will be started.

We will check your baby’s heart rate and position, then your abdomen will be cleaned using a special cleansing wipe. The anesthesia team will help prepare you for surgery by placing your epidural and providing additional medication to ensure the comfort and safety of you and your baby. Your St. Louis Fetal Care Institute nurse will be there for you through the entire process.

After your epidural has been placed you will be taken to the operating room. There is a waiting area outside the operating room where family members can wait. Throughout the surgery our team will provide your family with updates.

During the operation the team will make an incision in your abdomen, then make a small opening in the uterus. Your baby’s back will be exposed so the fetal surgeons can close the spinal cord opening. Once the repair is made the womb and abdomen are closed.

When the surgery is complete you will be taken to the recovery room where you and your baby will be closely monitored by the recovery room nurses and obstetric nurses.
