Valerie Akerson has been a healthcare social worker for over a decade. After receiving her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Washington University she worked in hemotology/oncology, then the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at SSM Cardinal Glennon. In 2010, after spending time at home with her children, Valerie returned to Cardinal Glennon as a social worker at Cardinal Glennon, working with patients who had hemophilia. She joined the St. Louis Fetal Care Team in 2011.
While she always loved her work in the NICU, Valerie was particularly drawn to maternal-fetal medicine, and her work at the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute, because she has a child of her own with special needs. Her daughter was diagnosed before birth with hydrocephalus, and was born with physical disabilities. She wanted to use her experience to help others. She advises patients and their families to write everything down and not to try to process all of the information at once, and to not be afraid to ask questions. Outside of work, Valerie enjoys spending time with her husband and three kids. She enjoys reading, cooking and baking, and her kids’ sports activities.
