Dr. Mike (Emanuel) Vlastos

Biography
Fetal Care Institute Director Dr. Mike Vlastos has led the team to become one of the leading fetal care centers in the country. He is triple board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gyecology, and Family Practice. He is an assistant professor at St. Louis University School of Medicine who is also certified in advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support, and neonatal resuscitation.

Dr. Vlastos received his M.D. from Creighton University. He did his residency in family practice at the University of Wyoming, his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Vlastos has done, and continues to do, extensive clinical research in the areas of MRI Placental Perfusion in normal and IUGR fetuses, progesterone in lactating and non-lactating women in early pregnancy, postpartum endomyometritis treatment, and middle cerebral artery velocity studies, both immediately before and after intravenous fetal transfusion. Dr. Vlastos is currently researching intrapartum management of maternal or fetal complications and laser application to fetal tumors. About his cutting edge research, he has published articles, given lectures, and presented at conferences. He has also earned multiple clinical and teaching awards.

Dr. Vlastos feels that the field of maternal-fetal medicine chose him and that helping a baby in the womb, before birth, is a privilege. He loves making a difference in the lives of women and families in remarkably fascinating, frightening, and difficult situations, and ultimately helping babies. He encourages patients to write down questions, bring them along, and ask anything.

Outside of work, Dr. Vlastos enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, being at home, enjoying the farm, being outdoors, and reading.
