Try this at home:
Milk carton birdhouse

When the birds fly north this spring, make sure there’s a home waiting for them in your back yard! A recycled paper milk carton can become a nesting place for all your feathered friends. Make sure an adult helps you with this project.

You will need:

  • 1 empty paper half-gallon milk carton
  • Stapler
  • Masking tape
  • Brown shoe polish
  • Paper towel or rag
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Wire or clothes hanger

What to do:

  1. Open up the top of an empty paper halfgallon milk carton, and wash and rinse it thoroughly. Let dry.
  2. Close the milk carton and staple it shut.
  3. Tear off 1–2 inch pieces of masking tape and cover the entire carton. Overlap pieces so none of the carton shows.
  4. Using a paper towel or rag, rub brown shoe polish over all of the tape to make it look like bark. Let dry.
  5. Cut an entrance hole in the front of the birdhouse.
  6. Using a pencil, poke several holes in the bottom of the carton for rain to drain out, and in the top to let heat and condensation escape.
  7. Make a hole through the top of the house near the staples. Put a short piece of wire or a clothes hanger through the hole to make a loop. Hang the birdhouse on a tree branch.

Send us your photos! Kids are welcome to e-mail a photo of themselves with their completed birdhouse. Send your photos to Glennon_Kids@ssmhc.com, and we will post the photos online at www.cardinalglennon.com.
