Hailstone to assume president’s role on Oct. 6

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 2, 2008 – Douglas A. Ries, the longtime president of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, has announced that he will transition from that role on Oct. 6.

Ries has led Cardinal Glennon since 1983, and will now serve as Senior Network Executive for University Affiliations with SSM Health Care – St. Louis, the parent network of Cardinal Glennon.

Sherlyn Hailstone, the medical center’s current executive vice president, will succeed Ries as of Oct. 6.  Prior to joining Cardinal Glennon in March 2008, Hailstone was president of SSM St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles.

Under Ries’ leadership, Cardinal Glennon expanded its physical facilities and greatly broadened its scope of services.  The medical center introduced its Glennon Care for Kids in 1996, putting in place a network of 23 sites that brings Glennon-quality care to children in their communities.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is the fact that we were able to bring our care to the children, to make ourselves of greater service to families,” Ries explains. “Parents have embraced the convenience of having outpatient surgery, pediatric emergency care and specialist physicians closer to their homes.  Of course, Cardinal Glennon has always stood ready to welcome those children who need more acute care at our main campus.”

In his new role, Ries will focus on creating and expanding non-pediatric relationships with academic health institutions.  Cardinal Glennon, SSM’s only pediatric care provider, has long been affiliated with Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“We are most fortunate to have someone with Doug’s background and broad talents take on this new role,” says SSM Health Care – St. Louis President James Sanger.  “Doug has advocated tirelessly for just and accessible health care, and we look forward to his continued contributions to enhance our ministry.”
