The recent fame, notoriety and goodwill of "Rally Squirrel for Cardinal Glennon" will soon make thousands of children at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center very happy. Not only has the St. Louis squirrel’s luck generated exciting victories for the Cardinals, but his charity apparel has already raised more than $150,000 for SSM Cardinal Glennon, dollars that will help build a new, safe, state-of-the-fun playground.
The young patients at SSM Cardinal Glennon were treated to a visit by the Cardinal Glennon Rally Squirrel mascot on Thursday.
"The Squirrel just wanted to meet the children that were being impacted by his charitable efforts," said Sherlyn Hailstone, president of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. "He was excited to hear that all the proceeds will go to building a safe, beautiful, interactive playground on the patio roof above the Bob Costas Cancer Center."
The squirrel gave "two paws up" to the creative design features.
"I’m just nuts about the soft climbing items," said Rally. "Kids and squirrels love to climb and jump around. I’m glad we can bring that joy to kids receiving treatment at this amazing hospital."
This furry frenzy started Oct. 10, with a press conference where Rally Squirrel named his charity of choice, SSM Cardinal Glennon. Over the past three days, more than 12,000 shirts have been sold and 5,000 more just arrived at 14 retail community locations and are selling fast. Thanks to a generous donation by Anheuser-Busch In-Bev to purchase the initial merchandise, all proceeds of the fundraiser go directly to the new playground.
Rally Squirrel Charity Apparel includes custom-designed T-shirts, hats (complete with squirrel tails) and trading cards. All charity merchandise will be available throughout this week at Helen Fitzgerald’s, Syberg’s and select Buffalo Wild Wings locations and the Anheuser-Busch Tour Center Gift Shop. Go to www.glennon.org for a complete list of selling locations.
