Kyle McCarty celebrated his third birthday with family and friends at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center on April 3. The toddler with the big smile is well-known by nurses and hospital staff who have taken care of him on the Transitional Care Unit every day since September 2007.
Kyle was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and had both kidneys removed at 3 months old. He is waiting for a kidney transplant and undergoes dialysis three times per week. In the meantime, Kyle has become quite popular around the hospital.
"Some of our clinic patients come up to the floor looking for Kyle just because he makes them smile," said Valerie Schaeffler, one of Kyle’s nurses. "And if you take him for a wagon ride, you’re his new best friend."
Kyle, who has four older brothers looking out for him, is from Jefferson City. His parents, Brian McCarty and Tobey Miller, were able to take him home for a while after surgery, but eventually Kyle needed dialysis full-time at Cardinal Glennon.
"After every procedure, even if it hurts him, Kyle is smiling and laughing five minutes later," said Brian McCarty. "It’s really amazing."
With a bubbly and happy-go-lucky personality, Kyle is a cheerful 3-year-old. He certainly brings joy to the halls of Cardinal Glennon.
