Tricia Sharp, RN

Tricia Sharp, this year’s Mission in Motion winner, spends every Christmas with her loved ones—all 60 of them.

NICU nurse Sharp and her family bring Christmas to the families of the NICU every year. They hand-make stockings, personalized with each child’s name and filled with gifts. Her oldest son dresses as Santa Claus and her other children take pictures of babies with Santa, to be placed into hand-made frames and given to the family.

“It’s hard to be in the hospital over holidays like Christmas, and Tricia and her family help our families celebrate their baby’s first Christmas in a special way,” said Cristie Rossel, director of the NICU. “They are such a kind and generous family to do this for our patients.”

Sharp and her family also sew Halloween blankets for the children in the NICU and give them away each year.

Selecting a winner was difficult: SSM Cardinal Glennon had more than a dozen nominations for Mission in Motion. Out of those strong nominations, two Silver winners were selected as well.

Social worker Mary Kay Brasken and Amanda Jones, clinical nurse for the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute, were selected as Silver winners.

Brasken is described by her peers as an “unsung hero of Cardinal Glennon” and a “savior” for the families she serves. Each year, Brasken organizes Christmas adoption families and purchases gift cards and presents for families in need. Her colleagues say she “consistently goes above and beyond her job description.”

Jones has a “work ethic that is one of the best I have ever seen” and is “a joy to work with,” her colleagues say. She frequently goes out of her way to help families. When a mother from Arizona delivered a critically sick baby, Jones drove from her Illinois home in the middle of the night to travel with this family to the hospital to be with their dying baby. She stayed with them that night and took photographs for the family.
