What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes happens when your body cannot properly process the food you eat.  This leads to extra sugar in the blood.  Taking good care of diabetes can prevent blindness, kidney problems, heart attacks and strokes.

What is the TODAY study?

Cardinal Glennon is currently participating in the TODAY study, which stands for Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth.  It is a nationwide research study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) designed to compare different ways to treat kids with type 2 diabetes, including changes in eating habits and physical activity and different combinations of medicines.

Healthy children, ages 10-17, who have had type 2 diabetes for less than 2 years are eligible to join the study.  Cardinal Glennon is looking for volunteers who will be asked to do the following:

  • Be more active and eat healthy foods
  • Check their blood sugar and take diabetes medicine twice each day
  • Visit Cardinal Glennon regularly for two to five years

Call us today at (314) 577-5648 to inquire or learn more about the research study.

Insulin Pump Class

Cardinal Glennon offers an introductory class to insulin pump therapy to answer all your questions: What is it? How does it work? Is it right for my child? How much does it cost? Will my insurance pay for it? How do I get a pump?

Classes are held in the Danis Auditorium at Cardinal Glennon.  Class is free and requires registration.  Dinner is served, so please bring your child’s glucose meter and insulin.

Please call to confirm your name and number of people attending to: Melody Williamson, RN, CDE, at (314) 268-2700 ext. 1599.
