Our pediatric heart team uses state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat children’s heart problems. As one of the fastest growing pediatric cardiology teams in the Midwest, our physicians are trained in the latest technology to help children with congenital heart defects. Technology helps our cardiologists better understand what is happening within a child’s heart to develop the best treatment plan for each child.
Pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital has the region’s only pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization suite, a unique space that allows a cardiologist to work alongside a heart surgeon to find and fix heart problems in the same room. Having the ability to diagnose and treat problems at the same time means safer care, faster healing and a better recovery process for children.
During a heart procedure on a sick child, every single minute is critical to providing the highest level of care. In this innovative hybrid suite, the heart team is able to act quickly to transition from a cardiac catheterization procedure to an open-heart surgery if needed. By performing these procedures in the same space and time frame, our team is able to dramatically increase good results for kids.
The hybrid cardiac catheterization suite gives our team access to everything they need to care for any congenital heart defect, including state-of-the-art equipment to perform three-dimensional angiography and fluoroscopy, a continuous X-ray that allows the team to see the motion of the heart.
Children who have a procedure in the Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Suite undergo anesthesia through our specially trained pediatric anesthesiologists.
Some children may benefit from Cardiac MRI, a painless and non-invasive test that uses imaging technology to take detailed photos of your child’s heart to examine the structure and function of the heart and blood vessels.
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is home to a 3.0 T MRI, the region’s strongest and most advanced. This means more images are taken in a single scan which gives the cardio-radiologist a more detailed picture of a child’s heart.
Lowest-dose imaging available for kids
The Imaging Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is a state-of-the-art space that offers the region’s lowest dose of radiation in pediatric imaging.
The MRI and CT suites are very unique spaces. Children can control the color and themes of the room through an iPad and can even pick out a movie to watch on the screen during their scan.
The Imaging Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is conveniently located next to the Dallas Heart Center.
Closed-circuit video streaming
When your child is an a procedure or surgery for their heart, a closed circuit camera transmits what’s going on in the operating room to the Dallas Heart Center. This keeps all members of your child’s heart care team informed of their procedure and progress in real time. An informed and collaborative team is crucial to the best outcomes for your child and their heart.
Learning about a congenital heart defect before your baby is born can help your family and health care team plan for what’s best. Fetal Echocardiograms and Level II Ultrasound at the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute make this early detection possible.
The St. Louis Fetal Care Institute is also located at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital and, like all of our health care teams, they work with multiple specialists, advanced technology and you and your doctor for the best care for your child.
